General introduction of Aluminum PCB

General introduction of Aluminum PCB

Among all Metal core PCBs, Aluminum PCB is the most common type. The base material consists of an aluminum core and standard FR4. It features a thermal clad layer that dissipates heat in a highly efficient manner while cooling components and increasing the overall performance of the products. Currently, Aluminum Backed PCB is regarded as the solution to high power and tight tolerance applications.

Advantages of Aluminum PCB

1.Environmentally Friendly: Aluminum is non-toxic and recyclable. Manufacturing with aluminum is also conducive to conserving energy due to its ease of assembly. For printed circuit board suppliers, using this metal helps maintain the health of our planet.

2.Heat dissipation: High temperatures can cause severe damage to electronics, so it is wise to use a material that can help dissipate heat. Aluminum can actually transfer heat away from vital components, thus minimizing the harmful effect it could have on the circuit board.

3.Higher durability: Aluminum provides strength and durability to a product that ceramic or fiberglass bases cannot. Aluminum is a sturdy base material that can reduce accidental breakage during manufacturing, handling, and everyday use.

4.Lightweight: For its incredible durability, aluminum is a surprisingly lightweight metal. Aluminum adds strength and resilience without adding on any additional weight.

Structure of Aluminum PCB

Circuit Copper Layer

The circuit copper layer (usually using electrolytic copper foil) is etched to form a printed circuit, which is used to realize the assembly and connection of the device. Compared with the traditional FR-4, with the same thickness and the same line width, the aluminum substrate can carry a higher current.

Insulating Layer

The insulating layer is the core technology of the aluminum substrate, which mainly plays the functions of bonding, insulation and heat conduction. The aluminum substrate insulating layer is the largest thermal barrier in the power module structure. The better the thermal conductivity of the insulating layer, the more favorable it is to spread the heat generated during the operation of the device, and the lower the operating temperature of the device, so as to increase the power load of the module, reduce the volume, extend the life-span, and increase the power output .

Metal substrate

What kind of metal is used for the insulating metal substrate depends on the comprehensive consideration of the thermal expansion coefficient, thermal conductivity, strength, hardness, weight, surface state and cost of the metal substrate.

In general, considering the conditions such as cost and technical performance, aluminum plate is an ideal choice. Available aluminum plates are 6061, 5052, 1060 and so on. If there are higher requirements for thermal conductivity, mechanical properties, electrical properties and other special properties, copper plates, stainless steel plates, iron plates and silicon steel plates can also be used.

Application of Aluminum PCB

1. Audio device: Input, output amplifier, balanced amplifier, audio amplifier, pre-amplifier, power amplifier.
2. Power Supply: Switching regulator, DC / AC converter, SW regulator, etc.
3. Communication electronic equipment: High-frequency amplifier, filtering appliances, the transmitter circuit
4. Office automation equipment: Motor drive, etc.
5. Automobile: Electronic regulator, ignition, power supply controller, etc.
6. Computer: CPU board, floppy disk drive, power supply devices, etc.
7. Power Modules: Inverter, solid-state relays, rectifier bridges.
8. Lamps and lighting: As the advocated promotion of energy-saving lamps, a variety of colorful energy-saving LED lights are well received by the market, and aluminum PCB used in LED lights also begin large-scale applications.

Storage conditions

Aluminum PCBs are generally stored in a dark, dry environment. Most aluminum PCBs are prone to moisture, yellowing, and blackening. Generally, they should be used within 48 hours after opening the vacuum package.

LED PCB

The LED PCB comes into being with the rapid development of the printed circuit PCB industry. Some LEDs were soldered on PCB to created lighting electronic products.

As we all know that LED will generate more heat compared with other electronic parts, which required the PCB to have a better ability for dissipating heat. For these special requirements, metal core PCB are frequently used on LED PCB, especially aluminum core PCB. This is because the aluminum PCB typically includes a thin layer of thermally conductive dielectric material that can transfer and dissipate the heat with much greater efficiency than a traditional rigid PCB.

Now SMD packaging type is the most widely used packaging form in LED applications. In general, it’s limited for the light emitted from a single LED component. So multiple LED components would be used for a single light fixture to achieve sufficient light. Like other semiconductor devices, PCB is the best method to electrically connect the LED components. And a PCB with LED components soldered is usually called as “LED PCB”.

Advantages of LED PCB:

When it comes to the advantages of using LED PCB, well there are plenty of them and we are now going to mention a few so that you know about the application too.

.Light In Weight
.No Dimension Issues
.Efficient Low Power Consumption
.Available In Different Sizes
.Heat Dissipation Performance
.Dust and Moisture resistant
.May be used in silver flex membrane switches and copper flex membrane switches.

The application of LED PCB:

Telecommunications

LED indicators and displays are always used for telecommunications equipment because of the surrounding machinery, the excellent heat transferability. So aluminum-based LED PCBs are extremely useful in this application.

Automotive

Aluminum PCB LEDs also used in cars on indicators, in headlights and brake lights, and other applications. The durability and competitive price makes these aluminum PCBs ideal within the automotive industry.

Consumer Electronics

Consumer electronics are those devices that are being used by humans on a daily basis. These electronics include smartphones and computers, in fact, even the new forms of fridges also have electronic components in them. The best part about the LED PCBs is that they offer low units per cost which make the price of the final product relatively less than what it’s supposed to be.

Medical

Lighting tools used in surgeries and medical examinations commonly use high-powered LED lights, and these LED lights often use aluminum PCBs.

This is primarily due to the durability and heat transfer capabilities of aluminum PCB LEDs — this ensures medical equipment is functioning properly regardless of the number of patients cycling through a medical office. In addition to lighting tools, medical scanning technology often uses aluminum PCBs as well.

As a PCB manufacturer with more than a decade of experience, we can provide LED PCB fabrication, components purchasing and assembly. You just need to upload your customized Gerber file and BOM for us to quote. And then you can check our quotation and decide to buy from us or not, it is also acceptable that you supply us the parts for assembly if you want.

SMT stencil and Laser Stencil

SMD stencil (Solder paste stencil) is necessary for Surface Mount Assembly.

1.Usage:

Squeegee solder paste through the stencil, the stencil ensures the solder paste is the right amount on the right position. Then you can place surface mount components on solder paste and put it into a reflow oven.

2.Stencil Type:

The stencil is a kind of bare stainless steel sheet. It could be in a frame or without a frame. The framework is for automated stencil machines. Non-framework is for hand solder. Usually, the framework is heavier and bigger than non-framework. So the framework is more expensive to ship and might be charged for dimensional weight shipping.

3.Existing Fiducials:

Fiducials are positioning points for automated stencil machines. The diameter of the fiducials is usually 1mm. We offered three options: none, half lasered and lasered through. Half lasered is a sunk bump, lasered through is a through-hole. Half lasered is for automated stencil machines. Lasered through is for hand solder or semi-automated stencil machine. Please note that if you choose half lasered or lasered through, but there are no fiducials inside, we’ll ignore this option.

4.Electropolishing:

Electropolishing (also known as electrochemical deburring) will remove small burrs, improve the surface quality and provide smooth inside walls for better paste release. This treatment is mainly for IC lead width less than 0.5mm and BGA chips.

Check Sana Electronic stencil capabilities in the following table:
